St. Petersburg Metro is a unique architectural complex that demonstrates the history of the city since 1955. Everything is imbued with history here — from the first eight stations-museums with luxurious interiors in the Stalin’s Empire style dedicated to a certain themes in the spirit of Soviet ideology, to simpler stations of the Khrushchev-era with “Struggle against Architecture Excesses” and stations with leaking ceilings built for the World Cup 2018 in a hurry.
Petersburg Metro is the deepest in Europe, this is due to the fact that the soil here is swampy. The tunnels were flooded repeatedly during their construction. This required using special methods for laying tunnels when the soil around future lines was frozen for two weeks.
During the Metro Tour, you will learn more about its construction and history, as well as explore the most excellent metro stations including Avtovo, which is listed under the most beautiful stations in the world according to The Guardian and The Telegraph. A private English-speaking guide will take you to the following stations:
- Ploshchad Vosstaniya
- Kirovsky Zavod
The fact that the new stations were built extremely poorly — you will see for yourself. Our tour includes visits to the most magnificent metro stations on the first built line and the deepest station in St. Petersburg — Admiralteyskaya.
The tour usually starts on Ploshchad Vosstaniya and ends at the Admiralteyskaya Ploshchad — next to St. Isaac’s Square, where most hotels are located. The tour is completely custom, so the route and duration can be changed according to your wishes.
Tour duration: 2 hours
This is an extra tour. This means that its price will be relevant only if it’s combined with some other tour. For example, you can book a Metro Tour with a visit to Peterhof, a City Tour or a Tour off the Beaten Path.
